Eligibility
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and physically and mentally healthy. Bachelor applicants should be senior high school graduates aged 18-28. Master applicants should hold a bachelor's degree and be no more than 35 years old. PhD applicants should hold a master's degree and be no more than 40 years old. Applications for the 2026 intake should be submitted by June 25, 2026.
Language
Chinese-taught bachelor's programs require HSK 4 with a minimum score of 180. Chinese-taught master's and PhD programs require HSK 4 with a minimum score of 210. English-taught programs require IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 68, Duolingo 85, or accepted equivalent proof. Language proof exemptions may apply when Chinese or English is the applicant's first or official language, or when a prior degree was taught in that language.
Application path
Create an account and submit the online application through HUT's international student application system. Upload academic certificate and transcripts, passport, language proof, no-criminal-record certificate, physical examination, and bank deposit certificate. Degree applicants should provide proof of at least CNY 40,000 in funds; language-program applicants should provide at least CNY 20,000. Postgraduate applicants should add an 800-word study and research plan and two recommendation letters. Upload a 1-3 minute self-introduction video in English, or in Chinese for Chinese-taught programs.

School-leadership-confirmed policy: all first-year international degree students also receive living-cost support, so the first-year award covers tuition and living expenses. From the second year, merit scholarships are assessed using academic and daily performance: top 50% receive 100% tuition, next 30% receive 50%, and remaining 20% receive 30%. Chinese language students may apply for the Hunan Provincial Belt and Road Scholarship of CNY 15,000; the guide lists self-funded language tuition at CNY 5,000.
